Our story

Unearthing the history behind the name

The Location

Highcliffe Castle was the vision of Charles Stuart, built between 1831 and 1836.

He probably saw it as a well-earned rest after seeing the Duke of Wellington through from Napoleon's Hundred Days to the Battle of Waterloo. His greatest historical highlight was the treaty that helped Brazil become independent of Portugal in 1825.

A bit of history

Did you know

We’re just a mile from Highcliffe Castle? With all its famous visitors from across the globe and royal connections, we celebrate its history in our pub name.

A Royal Welcome

It seems royalty couldn’t stay away from the castle.

A famous guest list started with the Crown Prince of Sweden in 1879, while The Prince of Wales paid a visit several times between 1880 and 1890. They must have laid on a good spread, because in 1900 King Edward VII popped in, then Wilhelm II Emperor of Germany in 1907 and King Alfonso of Spain.
